Listen to the reef before you even dive in
It’s often said that the underwater world is silent. Think again. A healthy reef crackles, rumbles, and croaks. Thanks to our underwater listening technology, you can hear it live, and then relive it after your dive.
Mini story on board
The boat floats peacefully. We lower the hydrophone a few meters, put on the headphones or speaker… The first sound surprises you: a shower of sparks crackling everywhere, then clicks, rumbles, and distant calls. And sometimes, while sailing, if nature offers us dolphins or other cetaceans, it’s magical. We listen from a respectful distance, and you hear sounds you’ll never forget.
What is it and how does it work ?
A hydrophone captures vibrations underwater. The Zoom F3 records these sounds with excellent dynamic range, clean and straightforward. Simply lower the sensor, listen live on deck, and save a short clip for later playback. No technical expertise required. In just 30 seconds, you can already recognize sonic signatures.
Bioacoustics, an exciting field of exploration
We’re talking about underwater bioacoustics here: listening to and analyzing the sounds of living organisms to better understand the ecosystem. And there’s still so much to discover. A crackling reef reveals its health, some species have signatures that are still poorly understood, and variations throughout the day can reveal behaviors that haven’t yet been described. Universities and research teams are increasingly interested in this field. Our dives generate clean, geolocated recordings that we systematically share with our academic partners. Your ears contribute to science, simply and effectively.
What we really hear
- The crackling of shrimp
Background of a living reef, fine and continuous, almost hypnotic. - The voices of fish
Grunches, croaks, short thumps. A cloud of sound for schools, more distinct signatures for larger individuals. - Life near structures
Arches, overhangs, small shipwrecks. The soundscape changes and guides us to interesting spots. - Exceptional encounters
During navigation, if we encounter dolphins or other cetaceans while respecting observation rules, listening becomes a signature moment of your trip.
What we do during your micro-shipments
- Listening session at anchor
We listen together, we comment, we locate the sounds on the site map. Fun and immediate. - Audio postcard
You leave with a short recording of the day’s reef. - Citizen science
Simple comparison between sites, sound markers near a small shipwreck, followed by a revisited area. We systematically send our recordings to universities and scientific research institutions. - Enhanced briefing
After listening, the water entry takes on its full meaning. You already know where the fish are chatting amongst themselves.
Three SIGNATURE moments
- The first spark
We plug it in, it crackles everywhere. Immediate click: the reef is alive. - The evening choir
According to the website, some hours are more talkative. We savor and record a memory. - A surprise at sea.
Dolphins or other cetaceans in the distance, a presence. We keep our distance, we listen. A suspended moment.
What you take with you
- A unique audio souvenir of your trip to Curaçao
- A sensory understanding of the reef that changes your perspective
- The satisfaction of having contributed, concretely, to scientific knowledge
